CBD for Birds

CBD for Birds

People love to have pets and many households treat their pets as direct members of the family. That means showering them with love, giving them plenty of exercise, and making sure that they’re fed healthy diets.

Dogs and cats may be the first animals to come to mind when thinking about pets, but many people adopt small birds instead of a four-legged friend. Unlike a dog or a cat, birds are often confined to a cage within the house, making birds even more reliant on people for food, water, and healthcare.

Like humans, dogs and cats, birds too have an Endocannabinoid System, making CBD a perfect remedy for ailments that may befall our feathered friends. CBD oil is a natural remedy that has been shown to be very safe for pets to ingest.

So far CBD has been an overlooked method of taking care of your bird, until now with Cannable’s Avian CBD oil.

CBD for birds: Research

Because CBD for avian health is still relatively new, most evidence of its healing and health potential is still anecdotal. However, the initial evidence that is available suggests that CBD can be beneficial and will help your bird with issues such as stress, anxiety, pain and inflammation.

CBD for birds: Assisting Treatment of Ailments

CBD oil may be able to alleviate psychological problems in birds as well as help with diseases, support the immune system and reduce skin irritation problems that may occur.

Arthritis, Pain and Inflammation

Even though they’re much smaller than us, birds still suffer from aches and pains. Whether it’s a parrot, cockatoo, or macaw, CBD modulates pain and swelling. Research shows that CBD targets receptors within the body to limit pain perception and start the downstream signalling of relief.

Avian pain often goes undertreated due to risk of side effects and cost. Therefore, CBD provides a promising solution to help birds get back to full health and lead a pain free life.

Anxiety and Stress

Like humans, birds may get stressed out. This could be due to fighting with other birds, changes in their environment, or because of boredom and loneliness. Issues like excessive feather plucking, excessive noise and self harm may occur due to excess stress and anxiety in birds. CBD oil may be able to alleviate these psychological problems as it may elevate the potential of dopamine, serotonin, neurotransmitters involved in learning, motivation, and mood. Helping to alleviate stress and anxiety.

Immune Booster

By managing inflammation and providing antioxidants, hemp oils protect the immune system. As consistent, chronic inflammation is associated with infection, birds lacking in proper nutrition may be at a higher risk of disease. Common diseases include parrot fever, proventricular dilatation disease, and psittacine beak and feather disease. While nothing replaces veterinary intervention, regular CBD treatment can help with some of the nervous, digestive, and skin conditions associated with these diseases.

High Source of Omega 3 & 6

Omega 3 and 6 are important fatty acids that a bird's body requires, especially aging birds who require more omega-3 fats than most. Fatty acids help build immune cells and lubricate joints – two common health concerns in older animals. High omega-3 to omega-6 ratios in fats provide anti-inflammatory benefits, and hemp oils (such as that used in our carrier oil) have an ideal 3:1 ratio. Regular administration of CBD and hemp oils can help birds live a long, fulfilling life.

Is it Safe?

CBD may interact with other medications that your bird may be taking so be careful if they are on anything else. Research into the effects of CBD oil is only just beginning and the effects on birds is still somewhat unknown. Contact your veterinarian if your bird is on other medication before administering CBD.
